Once more

23 april 2024 - Athene, Griekenland

Today I arrived in Athens. Took an oversized ferry to get here from Rhodes, which is the recommended way to travel really. The ferry took about 18hrs and stops at several islands on the way to get here. During the day things were misty but calm, at night the sea was significantly less calm. Athens is once more very different from the places I've already seen, for starters it is significantly larger than previous locations on my trip have been. To be expected of course, but still. I used a subway from the port to get within walking distance from my hostel, which was fast, but noisy. The city itself is hilly and busy, pavement seems to be more popular than asphalt for many streets, especially the smaller ones. Parts of it are clearly directed at the large amounts of tourists that come through here on a daily basis, me included. Streets are riddled with shops and restaurants of every kind, which really helps combatting the smell of some of the traffic. It is no longer weird to hear Dutch being spoken by random people on the street. And between all those streets the place seems filled with ancient ruines of all kinds, enough for a couple days of exploring for me at least.
